Grandmother thinks that herà son has become so involved inà his military activities and enthusiasm to develop in his career that he doesnââ¬â¢t see that he has beenà manipulated by theà Nazis ââ¬âlike a puppet onà a stringââ¬â¢- into doing terrible things and not ââ¬Ëcaringââ¬â¢ about their implications. Her husband is bitter and angry about the suffering that theà Germans had to face after the Great War and is also focused on reclaiming the pride of the country. Her daughter-in-law is focused on how smart and handsome her husband looks. However, in Grandmotherââ¬â¢s mind, what is ââ¬Ëof importanceââ¬â¢ isà the widespread suffering that the Nazis haveà caused. Grandmother expresses her strong opposition to her sonââ¬â¢s occupation,à accusing him of ââ¬Ënot even caringââ¬â¢ about the consequences his job brings. Grandmotherà recognises the harm that the Nazis have inflicted on the world- ââ¬Ëdoing the terrible, terrible things you doââ¬â¢.
